Punctuation Karate

15 Oct

With the emphasis on grammar in the new English syllabus it is important for English teachers to come up with interesting ways of incorporating grammar instruction into their classroom routines.

One approach, mentioned by a colleague, is punctuation karate (download the ‘punctuation video’).  Punctuation karate allows students to act out key pieces of punctuation.  The routine could be modified so that sound effects and/or pace better reflect the function of the punctuation.  I imagine that once the students have the key moves under their (karate) belts, you could incorporate the moves into a range of new activities (including fun, loud and interactive peer review of writing games).
