‘Ruffled feathers’

12 Apr

Lillie McFerrin is the person behind ‘5 sentence fiction’.  Lillie offers up a prompt each week, and issues a challenge to compose a 5 sentence narrative that responds to the prompt.  The prompt this week?  FEATHERS.

Below is my first attempt at the five sentence story.

Ruffled feathers

At the beginning of the process, all family and friends were in play; their value, feelings and importance were measured in a complex algorithm that saw friends triumph over third cousins, and elderly relatives overlooked in favour of lifelong friends.

After a convoluted regime of negotiations, consultations and mediations, the bride and groom had whittled the list down to just one hundred guests; the number was final, the process was complete.

The groom’s mother bustled into the room brandishing a revised list designed to smooth ruffled feathers.

The bride, pushed to her limits, reacted.

The groom’s mother is no longer her future mother-in-law.
