Engaging comprehension

7 Apr

I have noticed that a number of my students have weak comprehension skills.  In order to address this I have made a series of quizzes based on accessible texts.

My Year 9 class, for example, read Leonardo DiCaprio’s address to the UN, ‘Climate change is not hysteria,’ and then used mini-whiteboards to respond to questions that tested their comprehension skills and ability to identify the persuasive elements of a speech.

My Year 7 students will view a TED Talk entitled ‘A life lesson from a volunteer fire fighter.’  They will also be provided with a transcript of this speech.  They will then use the mini-whiteboards to respond to questions that test their comprehension, vocabulary and ability to make connections between the text and their world.
