Once upun a time there was a person who came up with the not so novel idea of creating a blog about teaching in ways that merge the technological and traditional or seek to encourage students to engage with issues, concepts and texts in different ways.   This person also had a penchant for puns, and made the decision to pepper selected posts with pun-filled insights.

While the puns are amusing, they also have application in the classroom.  Puns teach students that language is malleable and fun.  For example, in Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio, who is dying, says, “Look for me tomorrow and you will find me a grave man.”  Here, the pun is on the word “grave” signalling his imminent death.  They also are a good way of helping students to remember key ideas.  For example, when teaching American Civil Rights, once could mention to students that the Montgomery Bus Boycott was triggered when Rosa Parks parked herself on a seat and refused to rise and relinquish that seat to a white man.
